Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about drive tests, permits, scheduling, and our policies.
Scheduling a Drive Test
How do I schedule a drive test?
All drive tests are scheduled online at www.NWDriversEd.com. Click on Schedule a Drive Test at the beginning of the navigation menu, then scroll down and select your city.
How far out in advance can I schedule a drive test?
Currently, we schedule out 90 days in advance.
Why aren't there any appointments available when I'm trying to book mine?
We do not schedule out any further than 90 days in advance, so nothing past 90 days from the current date will be open. If nothing prior to that is open, then we are fully booked.
When do new appointments become available?
The website updates automatically with new availability every half an hour, exactly 90 days out.
Permits
I lost my permit. Can I still come to my appointment?
If you are under 18, we cannot keep your appointment without a physical copy of your permit. We can, however, reschedule you until you are able to find or replace it. Please note: the refund, cancellations, and no-show policy may apply. If you are over 18, we can accept a passport, a school ID with a photo, or some other form of photo ID with your legal name and your DMV customer number.
What if I have a permit from out of state?
Then you will need to make an appointment with the Oregon DMV to get an Oregon DMV Customer Number. We cannot test you if you are missing an Oregon Customer number. If you are under 18, you must have held a permit for a total of 6 months. Please bring your out of state permit to verify that you've held your permit for at least 6 months.
My Drive Test
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Please bring your Oregon permit if under 18, and a photo ID if you are over 18. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian will need to remain on-site during your test. You must wear closed-toe shoes and corrective lenses if listed on the back of your Permit/ID.
How long does my test take?
Our appointments are made for 20-30 minutes. The drive test itself will take 15-20 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment to complete paperwork. You will have some time beforehand to familiarize yourself with the vehicle, and afterwards your examiner will take a few minutes to go over your results with you.
Can I take my drive test if I haven't turned 16 yet?
No, you must be at least 16 at the time of the test.
I passed my driver test. Now can I drive by myself?
No, you still need to make an appointment with the DMV to get your provisional license before you can drive without someone else in the car.
The DMV
What happens if I pass?
Upon successfully passing your drive test, our office will report your score to the DMV. You will be able to go to the DMV the next business day. Please note: It could take up to 24 hours for the scores to be uploaded. When you arrive at the DMV office, they will already have the pass and score recorded in the system. If you already have a same-day appointment at the DMV, we will need to make a special reporting exception. Please notify our examiner and staff if you are going to the DMV on the same day of your drive test. At the DMV, you may be required to provide additional proof of address or other documentation. Please visit DMV2U.oregon.gov for what documentation is required at the DMV. Once you have met the DMV's requirements, they will charge you a fee for your license and take your picture. You will have the option of obtaining the REAL ID at that time. They will issue a temporary paper license while the official hard copy is prepared and mailed to you at a later date.
What happens if I fail?
If you are unsuccessful during your drive test, our examiners will provide you with feedback as to what you should work on to meet the state standards. You are not required to retest at the same location where you took your first test. You can take the test at any place authorized to perform DMV drive testing.
If I pass, what do I need to take to the DMV?
Nothing. You may go to the DMV the following business day. All test results are sent electronically to the DMV. This information is accessible from any DMV in the state of Oregon. Please let our staff know if you have a same-day appointment with the DMV.
You called me and told me I was ineligible for a drive test. What do I do?
You will need to call the DMV as soon as you can to figure out why you were flagged as ineligible. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure they are in good standing with the Oregon DMV. If you are not eligible at the time of your appointment, you will not be permitted to test. Please note: the refund, cancellations, and no-show policy may apply.
What is a DMV Customer Number/ID number/permit number?
It is a 7-digit number found on a permit or a blue sheet given to you by the DMV. It may start with an A, B, or C, or it may be 7 numbers only. On a permit, it is the number at the top labeled 4D. If you have taken your knowledge test, then you should have a DMV Customer Number.

Examples include an Instruction Permit, Oregon ID card, temporary permit, temporary ID, out-of-state ID card, out-of-state Instruction Permit, out-of-state license, work picture ID, passport, passport card, jail picture ID card, concealed carry permit, school picture ID, military ID card, or Costco card. We realize this may create challenges to scheduling appointments, and we appreciate your understanding.

If clients/students do not want recordings or images containing images of themselves used in the development of educational materials, they may notify their instructor or management.

Eligibility Requirements
You MUST have already taken your knowledge test and vision screening at the DMV prior to taking the drive test with us. If you have a valid learner's permit, you have already completed this requirement.
The DMV may have additional requirements prior to issuing you a license. The following is a list of eligibility requirements for customers choosing to take the driving test with NW Drivers Ed:
- ALL customers must provide their DMV customer number and date of birth so that we may confirm eligibility prior to your drive test. If we are unable to confirm your eligibility prior to your appointment, we will not be able to administer a drive test. If you have a restriction on your driving privileges and are obtaining a reinstatement, we recommend scheduling your drive test for at least one (1) day after the reinstatement has gone into effect as it may cause an issue when reporting your results.
- ALL customers must provide a VALID PHOTO ID at the time of their appointment displaying their legal name and a current image (a valid permit is required for customers under 18).
- Customers requiring the use of an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) MUST use a vehicle equipped with an IID during the test. Currently, we only administer drive tests using our vehicles. Even though you may be confirmed eligible to test with a third-party testing business, if you require the use of an IID, we will not be able to administer your drive test. Please contact another testing facility to see if they permit the use of your vehicle for testing.
- Customers MUST be at least 16 years of age or older at the time of the drive test.
- Customers who have failed a drive test may not take an additional drive test on the same day as the failed attempt. Customers no longer have a waiting period and can test the next day but cannot test twice on the same day.
Customers who are 16 and 17 years of age must meet the following additional requirements:
- Customers must have held a valid instructional permit from Oregon or another state for at least six (6) months prior to testing and must have their permit with them at the time of the test.
- If the customer's permit is from another state, the customer must first pass the knowledge test at the Oregon DMV and obtain an Oregon DMV customer number prior to testing.
- Customers must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during the drive test appointment. The parent or legal guardian must remain at our office during the testing session.
- Before being issued a provisional license by the DMV for customers who are under 18, the DMV will require documentation demonstrating completion of 100 hours of practice driving (or 50 hours if the teen driver completed an ODOT-Approved Driver Safety Course). The DMV may have additional requirements and the requirements listed above may be subject to changes in the laws. Only the DMV can ultimately confirm your eligibility to receive a driver license.
Testing Fees and Payments
To hold your appointment, payment for the test must be received at the time you schedule an appointment for a drive test. Testing fees are as follows:

NW Drivers Ed does not issue refunds for services performed. NW Drivers Ed does not issue refunds for missed or rescheduled appointments.
